Lasik Eye Surgery
Lasik eye surgery has been gaining popularity in the last few years. LASIK is a surgical procedure that can help a person remove their dependency on glasses or contact lenses.
Lasik eye surgery involves a surgical procedure that permanently changes the shape of the cornea, which is the clear layer that is in front of our eyes. This is done using an excimer laser. A microkeratome which is essentially a knife is used to cut a flap into the cornea. A hinge is then left at one end of the flap and folded back to reveal the stroma (mid section of the cornea). The computer controlled laser pulses will vaporize parts of the stroma.
As in any surgery, there are of course risks when you go for a Lasik surgery. Most people that have underwent Lasik are pleased with the results. Some people may also develop severe dry eye syndrome in that your eye cannot produce sufficient tears to keep your eye moist and comfortable. It usually causes discomfort and can produce intermittent blurring etc if not treated. Fortunately, this problem can be treated relatively easily.
Lasik has proven to be safe and effective for most people. Here are some advantages of Lasik Eye Surgery. - LASIK is able to accurately correct most levels of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. - The procedure is fast, usually lasting only five to 10 minutes, and is generally painless. - Because the laser is guided by a computer, it is very precise and results are very accurate. - In most cases, a single treatment will achieve the desired outcome; however, enhancements are possible if needed, even many years after the initial surgery.
Since each patient is different, results will vary. LASIK may cause your eye vision to become worse, you may not achieve 20/20 vision even after LASIK. Dry eye symptoms may appear after surgery.
